Overview

Arbonaut is a Finnish technology company that provides remote sensing services in forestry and related GIS system integration. The company carries out airborne laser scanning forest inventory projects and supports them with ArcGIS tools for forest stand delineation and semiautomatic inventories by species. Arbonaut also provides software and mobile field terminals for forest data collection, GIS for forest resource management such as forest road construction, and Internet customer relationship management solutions for communicating with forest stakeholders such as private owners. Arbonaut's customers include some of the largest forest companies in the world as well as several European government bodies in charge of national forest resources. Together with WWF, Arbonaut has developed an accurate and affordable method for carbon stock assessement in tropical forests that combines the use of field sample plots, sampling by airborne laser scanning, and satellite imagery. This method is known as LAMP, for Lidar Assisted Multi-source Program for REDD+ MRV. REDD+ is the United Nations programme for paying developing countries a compensation for the carbon captured in tropical forests. Arbonaut's LAMP methodology can assess that amount very accurately.
